Cycle Route 1 (max 22 miles)

Cycle Route 1 (max 22 miles)

Killerton Estate & Silverton, from Thorverton to Newton St Cyres

This route is fairly level with a few rolling hills in beautiful countryside and through picturesque villages. It can be done as 2 separate routes (refer sections 1 and 2), or just keep going and take a break in the second half of the ride at Killerton.

Start point: The Free public car park on Lynch Road, at the top of the village of Thorverton, taking the fork to the right off the main street (Thorverton is signed off the A396 Exeter-Tiverton road).

Directions
Section 1 (11 miles)

  1. From the car park turn left and at the T-junction, which follows immediately, turn right signed to Upton Pyne and as the road rises around a left-hand bend turn right signed for Raddon. Continue out of the village passing the playing field on your left.

  2. When you reach the T-junction (Ratcliffes), turn left signed Upton Pyne, past Ratcliffe Farm. Soon the road rises significantly and views open out. After a short descent take the first right at Rixaford Cross, immediately before a bungalow, for Shute.

  3. Proceed to an unusual junction (Shute Cross) – go straight on here towards Newton St Cyres. Descend past the golf course, and ignoring 2 left turns, at the first crossroads (Wyke Cross) turn left for Newton St Cyres. Proceed to Sweetham, arriving at Station Cross. Here you will find the Beer Engine pub on you right. You may wish to stop off for refreshments and sample the local Ale here.

  4. Continue straight over signed to Sweetham and Shute. At the grass triangle (Nortons Cross) turn right for Winscott, then turn left at the junction of Winscott signed to Shute.

  5. After a short distance take the first right for Upton Pyne and continue passing the junctions of Fiveoaks and Jackmoor. At the T-junction (Pye Corner) turn sharp left for Thorverton. At the junction of Nomans Chapel continue straight ahead to Thorverton (11⁄2 miles) to return to the top of the village and to the car park. Alternatively, turn right down the High Street for section 2.

Section 2 (11 miles)

  1. Cycle down the High Street, and out of the village, crossing over the River Exe. At the first crossroads (Latchmore Cross) turn right signed to Netherexe into a narrow lane.

  2. At the unsigned T-junction turn left and then turn right for Rewe at the grass triangle on the next T junction. Next, turn left for Rewe at the next T-junction. Cross straight over the A396 (Exeter to Tiverton Road) at the stone cross signed to St Columbjohn, and then cross over the railway, and two river bridges. The road now climbs from the river giving you the first views of Killerton House and estate to your left.

  3. Descend to the T-junction (Danes Cross) and turn left for Killerton. The entrance into Killerton House is on the left – where you may wish to stop off for refreshments.

  4. Continue in the same direction to a grass triangle at a T-junction and turn left signed to Silverton/Tiverton. Climb up the small rise and then drop down to the crossing over a small stream. Continue on this road through Ellerhayes and onto the pretty village of Silverton, enjoying the views of the Exe valley to your left.

  5. As you meet the main square in Silverton turn left past the village shops, towards Exeter (unsigned), passing the Church. Soon after leaving the village bear left at the junction, and after 100m fork right (unsigned lane). Descend to the T-junction (Beech Cross) and bear right. Drop steeply down to re-join the A396, opposite the Ruffwell Inn. At the main road, turn left and immediately right to return to Thorverton, returning to the car park at the top of the village, on the right.
