Walk 2 - Haldon Woods to Mamhead

Walk 2 - Haldon Woods to Mamhead

Haldon Woods to Mamhead Viewpoint (1 mile return or up to 2 mile circular walk)

This is an easy, level walk which takes you to a fantastic viewpoint, looking down the Estuary to Exmouth and Dawlish, and upstream to Topsham and Exeter. Make sure you do this on a clear day/evening – so that you get the best view as far away as Portland Bill!

Driving Directions to start

From the cottage take the A380 (Torquay Road) up Telegraph Hill. On the brow of the hill take the exit signed Old Haldon Hill and Great Haldon.

At the junction turn left and drive along this ridge road through a wooded avenue for one mile.

Turn right signed Ashcombe/Dawlish. After 300 yards at the crossroads go straight over – signed Ashcombe. After another half a mile, before the road starts to descend, turn left into the wooded car park.

Directions - The walk

Follow the level straight track for half a mile to reach the lookout point and Mamhead Obelisk (folly). You can return using the same route or for a slightly longer walk (up to 2 miles) follow the “long loop” or “short loop” signs.

And if you have time...

There are plenty of other walks in this area and of course graded mountain biking tracks with dedicated parking facilities and bike hire.

On your return you may wish to visit the Haldon Belvedere (Beautiful View), which will give you a view from Haldon Forest to Exeter. To do this drive back the way you came but cross the A380 and turn right at the junction, signed to Plymouth. This takes you along the ridge road and after 1 mile go straight on at the mini roundabout, passing the entrance to the Racecourse, signed to Dunchideock.

After 2 miles the road starts to descend and the Haldon Belvedere is found approx 2 miles along on the right.
